Evidence-based exercise physiology and physiotherapy for back pain. Movement that works with your body.
Back pain is one of the most common reasons Australians seek healthcare, but most people recover well with the right support. Whether your pain is recent or has been present for years, movement is one of the most effective tools available.
At The Biomechanics, our exercise physiologists and physiotherapists work together to understand what is driving your pain and build a clear, evidence-based path forward.
We focus on building your confidence and capacity to move, not just managing symptoms.
Back pain treatment has changed significantly over the past two decades. Some commonly recommended approaches are now known to be less effective than once thought.
Rest was once a standard recommendation for back pain. Research now shows that prolonged rest can slow recovery and reduce confidence in movement. Gentle, graded activity is more effective for most people.
MRI and X-ray findings like disc bulges or degeneration are common in people with no pain at all. Focusing treatment on these findings can sometimes increase worry without improving outcomes.
Treatments that are done to you rather than with you can provide short-term relief. Without an active component, they often do not lead to lasting change.
Advice that labels the spine as fragile or damaged can reduce confidence and slow recovery. The spine is resilient and responds well to progressive loading.
Our approach combines exercise physiology and physiotherapy within a biopsychosocial framework. We look at the full picture, not just the pain site.
A thorough assessment of your movement, capacity, goals, and the factors contributing to your pain.
A graduated exercise program designed around what your body can do now, progressing at a pace that builds confidence.
Education about pain science, the role of the nervous system, and what the evidence says about back pain and recovery.
Support to stay active at work, home, and in the activities that matter to you, including help navigating return to sport or work.

Meet our teamThis service is suited to people who:
Have had back pain for weeks, months, or years
Want an active, exercise-based approach to recovery
Have been told their scans show changes and are unsure what to do
Are returning to work or sport after a back injury
Are managing back pain alongside other health conditions
Want to understand what is causing their pain and what they can do about it
For most people, staying gently active is more effective than rest. Complete rest can reduce muscle capacity and increase sensitivity over time. Your clinician will guide you on how to move safely and progressively.
Disc bulges are found in a large proportion of people with no pain at all. Most disc-related back pain improves significantly with exercise and rehabilitation. Surgery is rarely indicated as a first-line treatment for back pain and is usually considered only when conservative care has not helped.
Both can help. Physiotherapists may use hands-on techniques alongside exercise, which suits some presentations. Exercise physiologists focus primarily on exercise prescription and behaviour change. Your GP referral, funding scheme, or preference for manual therapy may guide which is the right fit. Our team can help you decide.
No. Chronic back pain responds well to exercise and pain science education. Research consistently shows that graded exercise and improved understanding of pain can reduce intensity and improve quality of life, even for long-standing presentations.
No referral is needed to book directly. If you have a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan (GPCCMP), you may be eligible for Medicare rebates on up to five allied health sessions per calendar year. Our admin team can help clarify your options.
A well-designed, graduated program should not make your pain worse. Some temporary discomfort during early sessions can be normal, but our clinicians progress load carefully and adjust your program based on your response.
Yes. We regularly support clients through return-to-work and return-to-sport pathways. This includes functional capacity assessments, graded exposure programs, and liaison with employers or sporting coaches where helpful.
