With international Osteopathy week drawing to a close I thought it would be a great opportunity to educate those interested about Osteopathy!
Osteopathy has been around for quite some time. It was developed by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still in Missouri, USA in 1872.
It was developed with a core set of guiding principles used by the Osteopath to help their client get back to full health.
While things have certainly changed since the late 1800’s when these principles were created, they are still very relevant to this day. They can all be applied in a way that is patient-centred and evidence based to ensure the patient being seen will receive the best care possible. For example, the first principle is a great example of the biopsychosocial model. All aspects of the person in front of the clinician should be addressed, not just the injured area or site of pain.
We can also implement goal setting and patient/clinician directed treatment approaches to ensure that the individual is not only addressing their presenting complaint but also working towards their specific goals.
I think the 3rd principle (the human body is capable of self-regulation and self-healing) is incredibly important as we move away from an approach that is dictated by the practitioner ‘fixing’ the patient. Humans are incredibly robust, durable, and adaptable and rarely does the idea of needing to ‘fix’ come into the equation. Rather, the clinician and client can collaborate to ensure they are achieving goals and allowing an environment for the body to heal in cases where tissue damage is present.
Osteopaths can treat and manage a number of musculoskeletal conditions, injuries and pain. Some examples include:
Your session with an osteopath at The Biomechanics will begin with us listening to your personal story to ensure we completely understand your situation, attain all relevant information, and uncover all contributing factors to your presenting complaint.
We will then complete a thorough examination and will follow this by developing meaningful goals with you. The examination process can be quite varied but will often include testing your physical capabilities relevant to your goals through movement and exercise.
Using a collaborative approach with you we will then decide on the best way forward with evidence-based treatment and education to help to get you where you want to be. You will leave your appointment having been listened to with a plan moving forward.
Here at The Biomechanics we strive to best educate, empower, and assist you to take control of your treatment and recovery. We are motivated to provide the most up to date and evidence-based treatments for everyone that walks through our clinic doors. Would you like to see what an osteopath can help you with?
