Chronic Pain costs our country more than a billion dollars a year, more than cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease combined! But what is chronic pain? This 3 part series will help you understand what pain is, what is the research telling us about it, managing it and how we can begin to move forward and manage chronic pain today.
The first video below is an easy to follow visual representation about chronic pain. It helps you understand what current research has been saying about chronic pain - that it's not a joint or muscle problem, rather a 're-wiring' of the brain perception of itself. In other words, the brain has become more sensitive than before.
So why do we hurt? Do we actually experience pain, or is it merely an illusion? This second video is an entertaining TED talk by Lorimer Moseley who is a world leader in chronic pain treatment and research. In this video Lorimer explores the above questions, and explains that the pain that we feel is our bodies' way of protecting us from damaging tissues further. He also looks at what this might mean for those who suffer from chronic pain.
